Centre of Excellence in Municipal Leadership

The Business

One of the larger municipalities in Canada with a population of over a million people, this SEEC custom client has a young and diverse population – average age of 36 years – with 28 per cent visible minorities.  The city is noted for its excellent quality of life, outstanding recreational activities, dynamic economy and low taxes. The economy includes energy, financial services, film and television, transportation and logistics, technology, manufacturing, aerospace, a vibrant sports sector, and retail and tourism sectors. It is also home to a high number of corporate head offices.

The Partnership

In 2010, SEEC developed a highly successful Masters Certificate in Municipal Leadership (MCML) for this municipality. The intensive 15-day program was taught by SEEC’s faculty with the content aligned to the culture and values of the City.

The MCML is designed to:

• Develop leadership and team-building skills for existing leaders and those aspiring to lead
• Build critical management skills in the areas of Interpersonal Dynamics, and, Improving Operational Performance and Strategy
• Explore the latest trends, identify current issues of Municipal Leadership — with a view to preparing Municipal Leaders for the future
• The city has had 10 Cohorts of the MCML program, which includes sessions on:
• Personal Leadership and Team Dynamics
• Coaching and Mentoring for Peak Performance
• Strategic Management and Strategic Thinking
• Political Acuity
• Improving Organizational Performance
• Employee Engagement and Managing Change

This case study is an example of how SEEC can take an existing Open Enrolment program and tailor it to an organization’s specific needs.

The Business

Shanghai is a city with one of the largest migrant populations in China. Each year, millions of people, who are originally from other Chinese cities and provinces, settle down in here for their future career development and family prosperity. However, this massive population influx causes administrative and community management issues and challenges, particularly for those frontline government officers at the level of the city’s administrative districts. The training objectives are to understand new trends in Canadian community services, new management approaches and innovation, and to learn North America not-for-profit organizations’ roles and importance in the community management engagement.

The Partnership

By leveraging SEEC’s strong government and municipal training programs, faculty and resources, SEEC developed a customized 21-day learning solution for SHOD. The program, launched in 2011, blends lecture studies and guest-speaker sessions with government and community-related site visits in Toronto and Ottawa. The training topics cover:
