SEEC helps design new management program for Parks and Recreation Ontario

Parks and Recreation Ontario (PRO) and the Schulich Executive Education Centre (SEEC) of the Schulich School of Business at York University are pleased to announce the launch of a new management curriculum developed in partnership by SEEC for PRO members and those who work in municipal settings.

PRO undertook a provincial survey of municipal administration and parks and recreation leaders to determine core competencies for municipal managers. The survey identified three core competencies, which are the basis for this in-depth, three-day course.

  • Communicating with Impact
  • Municipal Strategic Management
  • Political Acumen in a Municipal Environment

The course curriculum will be presented as the Parks and Recreation Management Certificate Program, Oct. 19-21, 2016 at the BMO Institute for Learning in Toronto.

“One of PRO’s mandates is to deliver specialized training that our members and others working in municipal environments need to succeed today and in the future,” says Larry Ketcheson, PRO chief executive officer. “Our aim is to build capacity and professionalism in municipal recreation delivery and beyond. We are proud to be partnering with the Schulich Executive Education Centre on this exciting venture.”

Darlene Joslin, director of recreation and culture for the Town of Richmond Hill says, “This program will give a competitive edge to young professionals in municipal administration who are seeking to advance their careers. It’s a great investment in the talented people who will be our municipal leaders today and in the future.”

“As parks and recreation services are at the heart of community in Ontario, the Schulich Executive Education Centre is absolutely delighted to be involved with PRO in this initiative. Stronger capabilities in these areas benefit the citizens of Ontario,” said Alan Middleton, SEEC executive director.

The full program launch will happen on June 20, when full registration details will be available.
